Helicopter Mosquito Spraying Planned for Burlington

By: Rich Hosford

A heads up in case anyone sees a helicopter in the area and wonders what it’s doing.

The East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project will be conducting a helicopter spraying a pesticide to control mosquito larvae over the Vine Brook Swamp in Burlington, an area adjacent to Terrace Hall Avenue and Woodside Lane.

The work will be conducted between April 19 and April 26.

The chemical, Bti, will be applied in a granular form by a helicopter flying low directly over the wetlands. Residents do not need to take any special precautions for this application as the material a natural bacterium found in soil. The EPA classifies Bti as a relatively non-toxic pesticide.

Once applied Bti stays suspended in water for 24 to 48 hours and then biodegrades as it settles to the bottom.
