Battle of the Badges Blood Drive to be Held to Address Lack of Donations

By: Rich Hosford

Show your support for either the Burlington Police Department or the Burlington Fire Department as they engage in a friendly competition to help the American Red Cross during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The two departments are once again holding a Battle of the Badges Blood Drive to help address a shortage in donations due to the cancellation of many blood drives in the past months.

“The American Red Cross is facing a severe blood shortage due to an unprecedented number of blood drive cancellations during the COVID-19 outbreak,” a message from the departments states. “There is an urgent blood donation need now for patients with chronic conditions and trauma, as well as for ensuring an adequate blood and blood product supply going forward.”

Governor Charlie Baker said blood drives are essential and can be held during this time.

“Blood and plasma donors and the employees of the organizations that operate and manage related activities are an essential service,” he said. “Donating blood is safe and people should not hesitate to give.”

The Battle of the Badges will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn at 5 Wheeler Road  on July 8 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Come out and give blood by calling 1-800-733--2767 or visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter "Battle" to schedule an appointment.

When you arrive you can indicate whether you are donating on behalf of the Burlington Police Department or the Burlington Fire Department. The department with the most supporters will win bragging rights for the year.
