Board of Health Holding Annual Rabies Vaccination Day
Pet owners, get your four-legged friends vaccinated against rabies and protect both their health and your and your family’s health.
Burlington Board of Health will hold its Annual Rabies Vaccination Day on Saturday, March 18, 2017, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the Department of Public Works Highway Garage on Meadow Road (near Staples), a release from the Health Department states. There is no residency requirement. All dogs and cats living in Massachusetts are required by law to be vaccinated against rabies. Proof of this vaccination is required to license all Burlington dogs over the age of 6 months.
The cost of the vaccination is $15-1 year vaccine or $20-3 year vaccine (cash only accepted) for cats and dogs, the notice reads. Shots will be administered by Dr. Mian of the Merrimack Animal Hospital, 151 Stedman Street, Lowell, (telephone 978-453-3277). Please bring proof of your animal’s last vaccination (not copy of license). Dogs must be on leashes and cats in a carrier cage.
In conjunction with the clinic, the Town Clerk’s office will be licensing Burlington dogs, the release states. After your dog receives the vaccination you will be able to purchase either a one, two or three year license depending on the rabies expiration date. Remember to bring a proof of last rabies vaccination, not the tag, to be able to have a multi-year license. The number of years you can license is based on your expiration date: if your dog's rabies expires in 2018 you may get a one year license for $15; if your dog's rabies expires in 2020 you may get up to a three year license for $35.
Rabies is an infectious and contagious disease which can be transmitted to humans. The virus is considered to be 100-percent fatal, if untreated. Keeping your pets up-to-date on their rabies shots is not only the law but is also in the best interest of your animals and family.
