Burlington Looking to Become a 'Purple Heart Town'

By: Rich Hosford

Burlington has begun the process of becoming a Purple Heart Town.

Veterans Services Director Chris Hanafin was at the Board of Selectmen meeting on Monday to propose that the town pursue the designation from the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Hanafin explained that hundreds of communities across the county have become Purple Heart Towns/Cities. He said that doing so signifies a dedication by the community to support individuals with combat wounds, particularly those who have received a Purple Heart.

“Burlington becoming a Purple Heart Town is just establishing that it supports those who have been wounded in action defending freedoms the country holds dear,” he said.

Members of the Board of Selectmen supported the idea unanimously.

“I think it’s great,” Selectman Bob Hogan, the former veterans services director and a veteran himself, said.

Hanafin said that now that he has the blessing of the board he will approach the Military Order of the Purple Heart. If that organization agrees the town will have a ceremony honoring wounded veterans sometime later this year.
