Burlington Market Basket Employee Test Positive for Coronavirus

By: Rich Hosford

A Burlington Market Basket associate has tested positive for COVID-19.

WHDH reports that the store chain made the announcement Thursday afternoon. This is the fourth case of employees of the grocery store contracting the virus as previously two associates at the Chelsea location and one at the Chelmsford location have also tested positive.

The store employee will not return to work until fully recovered, Market Basket spokesperson Justine Griffin said.

“We hope for our associate’s speedy recovery,” ,” Griffin said in a statement. “Most supermarkets operating at this time are faced with these challenges. We have taken the same steps in each case, as we did here. We report it to public health officials and follow their guidance and bring in a specialized cleaning crew to clean and disinfect the store.”

Since the spread of the coronavirus, Market Basket says it has increased the amount of cleaning it does and has reduced store hours to give associates more time to do so.

Also, beginning today, April 2, all Market Basket locations will reduce the number of customers in the stores at any given time.

“This will support the important public health goal of social distancing and improve our customers' experience,” the store said in a statement.

The new healthy shopping protocol will include the following:

- The number of customers shopping at one time will be limited based on the size of the store. Tickets will not be used, and associates will direct traffic flow at the door.

- A single entrance and exit will be designated for customers’ use.

- Upon entrance, each shopper will be greeted by an associate who will clean and sanitize a shopping cart for them.

“In combination with other protocols, this will ensure that customers have personal space, can maintain social distancing, and feel more comfortable,” the statement explains. “Thank you for your continued support and participation as we navigate this challenging time together. We look forward to serving you.”
