Burlington Police Lieutenant Completes Leadership Training

A member of the Burlington Police Department has completed an intense classroom training program aimed at making officers better leaders.

Police Chief Michael Kent said in a statement that Lt. Michael McDade completed the Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) this month.

Lt. McDade attended the 66th session, which was held on June 4 to June 22. He is the fifth member of the Burlington Police Department to graduate from SMIP over the last three years.

“The more training we can provide to our command staff, the better prepared officers will be for a number of different situations and scenarios,” Kent said. “Lt. McDade was a great choice for this course and we look forward to sending additional members of the department through the training in the near future.”

SMIP is a program of the Police Executive Research Forum — an independent research organization that focuses on critical issues in policing — that provides senior police executives with intensive training in the latest management concepts and practices used in business and government, the statement explains. Participants also engage in discussions about the top issues facing law enforcement today.

Police leave the course with a clear understanding of general management theory, policy development, planning processes and organizational behavior. Topics include:

• Diversity

• Political management

• Organizational strategy

• Performance management

• Organizational change

• Leadership

• Managerial problem-solving

• Career planning

• Negotiation

• Process analysis

• Media relations

• New policing strategies and innovations

The program requires extensive reading with classroom discussion. Participants are also encouraged to apply the concepts and issues presented to their own organizations. Because of the course’s intensity and daily group study, during the week, everyone is required to reside on the Boston University campus, where the classes are taught.
