February SNAP Assistance Arrived Early So Plan Accordingly

By: Rich Hosford

Did you or someone you know receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments early?

If so, be careful to spend wisely over the next month because that could be the only payment you’ll see for the month of February.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance, due to the partial government shutdown in Washington, most SNAP recipients were expected to receive their February payouts between January 17 and 20 and they will not get another payment in February.

“It is important that clients know these are February SNAP benefits and that they should spend carefully to ensure that benefits last,” the department said in a statement. “They can be used the entire month.”

During this time recipients can use their SNAP benefits at any retailer that regularly accepts SNAP benefits. EBT cards will be accepted at any normally approved locations throughout the month of February.

The Department of Transitional Assistance says that if you need additional food resources they are out there.

“If you are facing immediate hunger contact the FoodSource Hotline at (800) 645-8333, where you can find information on food pantries and local programs where you can get access to free food,” the department says.
