Friedman Sweeps District is Special Election

By: Rich Hosford

Burlington went with the 4th Middlesex State Senate District as a whole on Tuesday in the Special Election with voters casting more ballots for Cindy Friedman (D-Arlington) than her competitor.

The special election was called after the passing of State Sen. Ken Donnelly who died on Sunday, April 2 due to complication from a brain tumor that he was diagnosed with eight months prior.

Friedman beat out Green/Rainbow candidate Ian Jackson in the district, made up by the Towns of Arlington, Billerica, Burlington; Precincts 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 in the Town of Lexington; and the City of Woburn, with a vote count of 7,201 to 704, according to preliminary results.

In Burlington, Friedman won the race with 553 votes to Jackson’s 71.

Friedman, who was Donnelly’s chief of staff for nine years, said she will work diligently to carry on the late senator’s legacy. We will have full coverage of the reaction to the win from Friedman and her supporters on Wednesday.
