Last Day of School in Burlington Moved Earlier, April Vacation Shortened

By: Rich Hosford

A new date has been set for the end of the Burlington school year and April vacation has been altered.

On Tuesday evening the School Committee, at the recommendation of Superintendent Eric Conti, voted to amend the School Department schedule in two ways.

The first was to make the last day of school be Friday, June 19 instead of Wednesday, June 24. Conti explained that it made more sense to wrap up at the end of the week rather than mid-week.

The second, to make up the days lost by changing the end of year date, was to shorten April vacation by three days. So now there will be a break from distance learning on Monday, April 20 (Patriot’s Day) and Tuesday, April 21 but it will resume the 22nd through the 24th.

There was some concern among members due to reports that teachers, students and parents are all currently stressed by the difficulties of remote learning.

“I’ve gone back and forth on this,” School Committee member Martha Simon said. “My biggest concern is the teachers, parents and students needing a break but I see the benefit of the four day weekend so I support it.”
