Letter to the Editor: Approval of Monument Sign Creates Bad Precedent

The following is a Letter to the Editor:

Dear Editor,

Burlington’s Board of Selectmen recently voted 3-2 to allow a developer to place a fourteen foot directory sign on town-owned property, adjacent to the new Shoppes at Simonds. This property falls within the town center overlay, which prohibits such signage, but the location is not the only concern. The greater problem with this decision is the precedent it sets. What business would not want to use town-owned property to promote itself? How can the Board of Selectmen justify granting this benefit to one business but not to others? This was a regrettable decision that is likely to create problems throughout town for many years to come.
