Letter to the Editor: In Support of Student Demonstration for Gun Legislation

By: BNEWS

The following is a Letter to the Editor.

Dear Editor,

We are writing to express our support for the students of Burlington High School who will participate in the National School Walkout this week. On March 14, 2018, at 10 am students, teachers and supporters around the world will walk out of their schools for 17 minutes to honor the students and faculty killed in the massacre at the Parkland, Florida high school on February 14, 2018.

The BHS students join an expected 185,000 others across the country as they protest gun violence in our country, and call on our nation’s leaders to enact reasonable gun legislation.

Students and teachers have the right to feel safe at school; Parents have the right to know that their children will return safely home at the end of each school day.

We stand in solidarity with these brave students as they exercise their right to peacefully protest Congress’ lack of action to combat gun violence in our society. They are the future of our nation and we are proud to see them leading the country on this important issue.

Many of our students will continue to spread their message at the March for Our Lives in Boston March 24, at 12 pm. We urge all community members to join them in this noble effort.

Editor's note: We reached out the BHS Administration who said the “school leadership respects the rights of students to demonstrate and make their voices heard while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the institution. The leadership team has discussed how to support the students and keep them safe. It is also great the the community supports our kids.”
