Longtime Deputy Chief of the Burlington Fire Department Passes Away

Longtime resident of Burlington and Retired Deputy Chief of the Burlington Fire Department, Lawrence F. “Larry” Rice, passed away at the age of 78, after a lengthy illness on Friday, June 7.  

He was beloved husband to Harriett C. Rice. Born and raised in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Francis W., and the late Sarah Rice.  “Larry,” as he was known to family and friends, was a United States Marine Corps Veteran, he served in the Marine Corps from 1957-1960. 

Larry joined the Burlington Fire Department in 1967.  He rose to the rank of Lieutenant in 1971.  He was appointed Deputy Chief in 1973, and had also served as Acting Chief at one time. Larry retired from the Burlington Fire Department in 1992, after 25 years of service.

Larry was a proud Marine, and active in Marine Corps Charities and causes.  He was a member of the Marine Corps League, Burlington Detachment and the George Dilboy VFW Post in Somerville.  Larry was also a member of the USS Constitution’s “1812 Marine Guard,” and he was a Boy Scout Troop Leader. 

Larry is survived by one daughter, Lorraine Radice of Burlington; one son, Lawrence Rice and his wife Pamela of North Chelmsford and also by four grandchildren.
