New Civilian Dispatcher Appointed to Fire Department

By: Rich Hosford

The Burlington Fire Department has a new person manning the phones to deal with emergencies in town.

At Monday night’s Board of Selectmen meeting Town Administrator Paul Sagarino appointed Thomas Cardwell as the department’s newest civilian dispatcher.

The appointment was made at the recommendation of Chief Steve Yetman who said the vacancy opened up after a previous dispatcher left the department to become a firefighter/paramedic in a different town. He said department leadership received many resumes and interviewed two people, finally landing on Cardwell for the position.

Cardwell is a Burlington resident and graduated from Burlington High School in 2008. He has an Associates Degree from Middlesex College in criminal justice and a Bachelor’s Degree, also in criminal justice, from Salem State.

Cardwell is currently enrolled in a paramedic program at Northern Essex Community College. He also currently works for Action Ambulance as an EMT basic supervisor.

Sagarino made the appointment at the chief’s recommendation and the board voted to waive the standard 15-day waiting period on new hires.
