Numerous Important Health Topics to be Discussed by Speakers at BoH Health Fair

There will be an opportunity to learn about a wide range of health topics right here in Burlington 

 

The Burlington Board of Health will be hosting the annual Burlington Community Health Fair on Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Burlington High School. This year’s health fair will include a variety of speakers, exercise demonstrations, educational information from over 60 exhibitors, free screenings, and free raffles.

 

The speakers at this year’s Health Fair will talk about a variety of health topics.  The Speaker Series will begin at 10 a.m. with Northeastern Student Nurses Elizabeth Sheridan, Cassidy Sorenson, and Sarah Spencer discussing “Loneliness and Being Alone: Is it the Same?” At 10:15 am, Covanta will inform residents of how to identify mercury containing devices in their home and the proper way for disposal. Speakers will then be presented in half hour increments with Melanoma Detection at 10:30 a.m., “Suicide Prevention 101” at 11 a.m., “Hormones and Your Health” at 11:30 a.m., “Stress & Your Metabolism” at 12 p.m., and “2020 Vision for Optimal Health” at 12:30 p.m.

 

The Board of Health said in a release on the event that the Melanoma Education Foundation (MEF) will be presenting “Melanoma Detection”. The MEF is a nonprofit organization devoted to saving lives from melanoma, a common skin cancer that is often deadly unless detected early. Information will be provided about early self-detection strategies to implement life-long habits for skin cancer prevention. 

 

“Suicide Prevention 101” will be presented by Kendra McDonald, MS, Manager, Community Education & Outreach program at Samaritans, Inc., a non-denominational, not-for-profit volunteer organization dedicated to reducing the incidence of suicide by befriending individuals in crisis and educating the community about effective prevention strategies. McDonald has nearly a decade of experience in the mental health field and has personal experience supporting individuals with suicide prevention.

 

“Hormones and Your Health” at 11:30 a.m. will be presented by Larry Maida, RPh of Maida Pharmacy.  Maida Pharmacy Compounding and Wellness is an independent pharmacy specializing in personalizing medications to address the unique needs of patients. Maida has extensive experience consulting with patients and providers on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and will share success stories and experiences with HRT.  

 

“Stress & Your Metabolism”, beginning at 12 p.m., will be presented by Soul Warrior Consulting, Inc. Discussions will include how stress can affect your metabolism and how nutrition can be used for weight loss or gain when exercise is a part of the routine.  

 

Lastly, at 12:30 p.m., Karen Potter, Holistic Nutritionist with ABC Family Chiropractic and Wellness will present “2020 Vision for Optimal Health” focusing on what “health” really means and will touch upon those things that can help you live a healthier lifestyle in 2020 and beyond.  

 

Speaker presentations will be located in a separate room next to the Burlington High School gymnasium while exercise demonstrations and health fair exhibitors’ display tables will be located in the gymnasium.  Exercise demonstrations will be ongoing throughout the day with Kickboxing, Matter Balance Exercises for Older Adults, Pilates, and Zumba Gold 50+. Health screenings will include bone density, facial sun damage, posture, balance, and blood pressure. There will also be assisted stretching routines, nutrition and food resources, oral health resources, and many other health and wellness services.  

 

No registration is required to attend speaker presentations. All services are provided free. In addition, all guests will receive chances to win more than 30 different free raffle items including gift baskets, gift cards, one month memberships, gift certificates, and many more.
