Obituary: Beloved Family Man and Retired DPW Lead Foreman James “Jay” Marchese, Jr., 64

A beloved family man, Shawsheen Tech graduate and longtime Burlington town employee passed away this week.

James “Jay” Marchese, Jr., retired Highway Lead Foreman for the town of Burlington, passed away at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center on Friday, May 15, 2020, his obituary says. The beloved husband of 24 years to Patricia (Wagner), Jay was 64 years old.

Jay was born in Newton and was raised in Burlington and was a graduate of Shawsheen Technical High School. After high school Jay entered the United States Army, serving his country for two years during peacetime. After that he began his career with the Town of Burlington DPW.

Jay would meet his future wife, Trisha Wagner, through mutual friends in 1986.

“They dated for ten years and grew their family before marrying in February 1996,” his obituary reads. “They settled in Burlington where they raised two beautiful daughters.”

Jay worked for the Town of Burlington for 35 years and retired as the  Lead Highway Forman. He was recognized by the town for his dedicated service to the DPW at a Selectmen’s meeting on June 27, 2016 followed by a wonderful retirement party the following January.

DPW Director John Sanchez said he first met Jay in 2006 when he was already a elad foreman working for the Highway Division.

“I found him to be a very friendly person who always wanted to take care of people,” Sanchez said. “He always had the very best interest of the town at heart.  Whether it was doing his regular job, or when volunteering, for example, during Truck Day. He made many friends here, not just in the Highway Division, but the town as a whole. We will miss him.”

Finally, Jay’s obituary says he was very close with his family and was especially fond of his daughters’ children.

“Jay’s greatest joy were his five grandchildren,” it says. “He lived for his grandkids. They were his pride and joy. The reason for his very biggest smiles.  They enjoyed a memorable trip together to Disney a few years back and many trips to Lake Winnipesaukee. In his mind he could never give them too much. Jay will be remembered for his dedication and love to his family, friends and to the great community of Burlington.”
