Police: Clear Snow Before You Go

By: Rich Hosford

With more snow expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning the Burlington Police Department has a message for motorists before they pull out of their driveways: Clear off your cars.

During last week’s storm Burlington Police tweeted the photo above with the caption:

“While we appreciate the brake lights visible, this is not good enough. Please clear all snow from vehicles.”

The Massachusetts State Police are also urging drivers to fully clear their vehicles before driving. They were tweeting the hashtag #ClearSnowBeforeYouGo and posted a video demonstrating the proper way to clear a car.

In the video, MSP Trooper Dustin Fitch explains that properly clearing a vehicle means more than just cleaning a hole in the snow in the windshield and calling it good. He said all snow must be removed from the hood, roof and trunk of the vehicle. Both windshields and all windows should be completely clear. Finally, side mirrors, brake lights and license plates must also be cleared.

Failure to properly clear snow off a vehicle can lead to a citation from police.
