Rockland Trust Move to Cambridge Street Approved

By: Rich Hosford

After multiple meetings and a lot of changes to the original plan, the Rockland Trust project at 170 Cambridge Street was approved by the Planning Board last week.

The bank, which has locations throughout eastern Massachusetts, was looking to move its Burlington location from Wilmington Road to the more central Cambridge Street lot at the intersection at Forbes Avenue. The site is 23,000 square feet and currently has a two story office building on it that will be torn down. The Rockland Trust building will be one story and 2,700 square feet.

In order to get approval from the board the plans needed to fit with the town center overlay district’s requirements. In the original plan the building was set back in the lot with a parking lot in front. At the encouragement of members of the Planning Board and the Planning Department staff it was moved to the front of the lot which fits with the plan for the overlay district.

They also connected the sidewalk directly to the front entrance and the parking lot has two-way circulation throughout except for the drive thru, as the board requested. They also added a section of hard-scale landscaping at the back of the property that fire trucks can use to maneuver around the parking lot.

Members of the board thanked the representatives from Rockland Trust for listening to their concerns.

The plan was approved with the final condition that there be no temporary signage during construction.
