School Department and Unit D of Educator's Association Work Out New Contract
By: Rich Hosford
The School Committee voted to approve a memorandum of agreement for a new contract for Unit D between the School Department and the Burlington’s Educators’ Association (BEA).
Unit D includes the Burlington High department chairs, the middle school team leaders and the Special Education Department’s team chairs.
Superintendent Eric Conti said getting a new contract for the unit was something he had wanted to do since he started eight years ago. The old one, he said, was unclear and was in need of an update. He commended BEA President Diana Marcus for her work in getting everyone together to work it out.
Conti said it was also important to have a workable contract for the members of the unit.
“I would consider them to be some of our educational leaders,” he said. “As you can see in the quality of the programming we have.”
Marcus also said she was pleased to make progress on the new contract.
“We both came into this with a cobbled contract that we had to work out over time,” she said. “I admit it’s been on the back burner sometimes but by finding time and involving the Unit D members, getting the information together, we were able to look at it holistically.”
Members of the committee complemented the two groups on reaching the new agreement.
