School Dept. Announces New Director of Facilities, Finance, & Technology in Wake of Robinson Retirement

By: Rich Hosford

The School Committee welcomed three new members to the School Department’s business office on Tuesday who were brought on in the wake of the retirement of Finance and Operations Director Craig Robinson after 20 years of service.

Superintendent Eric Conti said Robinson was leaving big shoes to fill and that his replacement would need additional support as the district and the complexities of the department continue to grow.

He announced at Tuesday night’s School Committee meeting that Robert Cunha, who is currently the town’s Director of Technology, would be the department’s new Director of Facilities, Finance, & Technology.

“Bob is a Burlington resident and is committed not only to the town but has been working to put Burlington on the forefront of not only our technology infrastructure across schools and general government but the integration of that technology into our instruction,” Conti said.

The superintendent reiterated that it was a big job and that Cunha would need support.

“As you mentioned Craig wears many hats and we are separating out some of those hats in the office,” he explained.

He went on to say that long-time Maintenance Department employee Steve Zarba would be stepping up his role as the new Maintenance Supervisor.

“We have nearly a million square feet of building space and Steve has worked in all the buildings,” he said. “He’s a skilled tradesman and has run a general contracting company and has worked with contractors. There will be a learning curve but he will be able to keep all the current project we have underway.”

Finally, Conti announced that Nichole Coscia, currently the town’s budget analyst, will be the office’s new Finance Manager. Coscia has experience working in schools from time spent in the business office in the Stoneham School Department.

“I personally look forward and am excited to working with all of you,” Conti said.

Robinson himself agreed the announcements made that night were good for the department.

“You have three people who are extremely qualified and I think you’ll have a great team,” he said. “We have already started moving summer work over to them.”

Members of the School Committee welcomed the three new hires/promotion.

“Welcome and congratulations to all of you,” Chairman Tom Murphy said.
