School Officials in Early Stages of Creating MSMS Spring Musical

By: Tad Stephanak

Marshall Simonds Middle School is looking into producing a spring musical.

During the October 29 meeting of the Burlington School Committee there was discussion on the new schedule at Marshall Simonds Middle School. At the end of discussion, Superintendent Dr. Eric Conti informed the committee of the intention to start a musical production at the middle school.

Conti noted that the BHS Spring Musical has been moved to the fall semester, which is a production of the holiday musical Elf. He pointed out that this change leaves a block of time open to make adjustments for a possible MSMS spring show.

“We are going to do our best to put together a budget to make it work,” he said. “There’s the possibility of seeking funds through the Burlington Education Foundation for the first year.”

MSMS Principal Cari Perchase, who approached Dr. Conti with the idea, addressed the committee.

“We have a lot of talented students and talented staff and we would love to have them showcase their talents,” Perchase told the committee.  “For a school of our size I think it’s appropriate to have a school musical.”

Perchase referred to her lack of experience with such an endeavor.

“I have no clue where to start,” she said. I rely on the folks who have those talents. We have a range of what the highest level of show could potentially be. If it doesn’t happen this year then we certainly want to explore it for next year as we explore after school offerings.”

The School Committee will hear more on the logistics and budget options for a Marshall Simonds Middle School musical production at future meetings.
