Selectmen Recognize DPW Drivers Who Won State Snow Roadeo Competition

Two Burlington Department of Public Works employees were recognized with a special Certificate of Recognition by the board at Monday night’s Board of Selectmen meeting.

DPW members Mike Desimone and Patrick Duran were honored for taking first place in the Mass Highway Association’s Driver Skills and Safety Event on July 17 at Wachusett Mountain Ski Area. The event is otherwise known as the Snowplow Roadeo but Town Administrator Paul Sagarino emphasized it is an important event that tests drivers’ skills and safety awareness.

“Although it is affectionately known as the Snowplow Roadeo it is a very serious competition,” he said, adding that he believes the win is reflective of the work of all Burlington employees. “What this highlights for me, and what I want our residents to know, is our employees strive to be great at what they do. This is an acknowledgement of what I see every day across town and it makes me proud of the hard work and dedication our employees put into their jobs. Congratulations to Mike and Patrick.”

The two men, who beat out 30 other teams to win the top spot in the states, will represent all of Massachusetts in the 2019 Western Snow & Ice Conference Snow Roadeo from September 25 to 27 in Loveland, Colorado.

DPW Superintendent John Sanchez said the competition is designed to promote teamwork, safety awareness and driving skills. He said that while in Colorado the two winners will also attend seminars on snow removal related topics.

Members of the Board of Selectmen praised the two DPW drivers on their performance in the competition.

“In a word, guys, awesome,” Selectman Nick Priest said. “Awesome that you went and did it and came in first place, awesome that you are going to Colorado to represent the state and awesome that you guys are skilled and use those skills here in Burlington. I think I speak for all the residents of Burlington when I say we’re lucky to have you here.”

“It doesn’t surprise me one bit,” Selectman Mike Runyan said. “I know Mike and Pat pretty well and I know the entire DPW works hard every day and takes their jobs seriously everyday. I truly appreciate what you and our DPW does. Good luck in Colorado.”

“Congratulations to both of you and thank you for representing the town and the state,” Vice Chair Jim Tigges said. “Hopefully we’ll see you back here in October and we can present you with more shirts and plaques.”

I hope people appreciate how difficult it is to drive this equipment never mind excel at it like you did in this competition,” Selectman Bob Hogan said. “We have a great group of people here who take care of this town and we appreciate that. Congratulations.”

“I just want to say thank you and congratulations for what you’ve done for the town,” Board Chair Joe Morandi said. “It’s wonderful.”
