Selectmen Vote to Extend Liquor Store Hours for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve

By: Rich Hosford

People will have a little more time to buy wine for their Christmas dinners or beer for their New Year’s Eve parties this year.

On Monday the Board of Selectmen, which controls the hours liquor stores have to close on Sundays, voted to extend the stores’ hours of operations for Christmas Eve and New Years Eve.

Normally all liquor sales at stores must stop at 6 p.m. on Sunday per town regulations. However, since both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve fall on Sundays this year, members of the board thought it would benefit shoppers to have more time to pick up their last-minute libations.

The board voted 5-0-0 to allow liquor stores to stay open until 11 p.m. on New Year’s Eve on Sunday, December 31.

Board members were not so like-minded when it came to Christmas Eve. They voted 3-2 to allow liquor stores to stay open until 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 24. Selectmen Joe Morandi, Jim Tigges and Mike Runyan were in favor and Selectman Bob Hogan and Chairman Chris Hartling were against.
