Shake Shack Eying Burlington Mall Location

By: Rich Hosford

The New York-based fast casual restaurant Shake Shack is eying Burlington for a future location.

Shake Shack Massachusetts LLC has filed a special permit application with the Planning Department to occupy a space at the Burlington Mall in the former Sears location that is currently under renovation.

“Shake Shack is a well-recognized, fast casual restaurant offering its patrons high quality American style food in a relaxed atmosphere,” a letter with the application states. “This concept, which originated in New York City has successfully expanded across the United States with several locations currently operating in Massachusetts.”

Shake Shack's Burlington location will, if approved, occupy a 3,548 square foot tenant space plus an exterior/patio dining area which will provide patrons with a variety of seating options.

Shake Shacks offered a variety of burgers, hotdogs and sandwiches. It also features a variety of milkshakes and frozen custards.

According to its Wikipedia page, the business started off as a “hot dog cart inside Madison Square Park in 2001” that became very popular. In 2004 it moved to a stand within the park, expanding its menu from New York-style hotdogs to one with hamburgers, hotdogs, fries and its namesake milkshakes. The company says that it uses all-natural Angus beef only and says that its meat has neither hormones not antibiotics.

The application is scheduled to be before the Planning Board on Thursday, August 15.
