State Department of Public Health Lifts Ban on Reusable Shopping Bags

By: Rich Hosford

Are plastic or paper bags from the grocery store cluttering your home?

You can now go back to bringing your bags with you and both saving space and helping the environment.

Last Friday, Dr. Monica Bharel, Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), rescinded the order restricting the use of reusable bags in grocery and retail stores.

The order had been in place since March 25 and was meant to “reduce COVID-19 exposure for customers and employees.” As the number of new cases trends downward and the state continues with the Phase 3 of the reopening plan, Dr. Bharel said it was time to make the change.
