Burlington Police and Burlington Public Schools Respond after Student Brings Knife to School

Chief Thomas P. Browne and Superintendent of Schools Eric Conti report that Burlington Police and Burlington Public Schools collaborated in their response Tuesday to an incident in which a student brought a knife into school.

On Tuesday, Nov. 1, at approximately 8:50 a.m., staff at the Marshall Simonds Middle School and School Resource Officer Vito Costa learned that a student located a kitchen paring knife on the grounds of the school. That student immediately notified an instructor, and an assistant principal immediately took custody of the knife.

A subsequent investigation determined the identity of a middle school student who brought the knife into school with them. That student’s family was notified and school staff spoke at length with the student, who will face discipline in accordance with the Burlington Public Schools’ policies, procedures and code of conduct.

Due to the student’s age, police are unable to file charges connected to the matter, but will continue to work with school officials to ensure the safety of all students and staff.

Police will have extra units on hand and will maintain a visible presence at school today, and again on Wednesday morning out of an abundance of caution.

Burlington Public School District puts student safety first,” said Superintendent Conti. “We work closely with the Burlington Police Department to ensure that all situations are addressed in the best interest of all students.”

“Our School Resource Officers work and train hand in hand with Burlington Public Schools so we are ready to respond to any threats that emerge, and Officer Costa worked closely with school staff to ensure this incident was brought to a swift and safe conclusion,” said Chief Browne. “Our officers will continue to work closely with Burlington Public Schools to ensure this situation is addressed, and that all students are aware of the seriousness with which we take weapons being brought to school.”
