American Steakhouse Smith & Wollensky Looking to Open in Burlington

A restaurant group that was originally set to bring a high-end Italian restaurant to town has changed course and is now seeking a green light to open a steakhouse instead.

As reported by BNEWS, PPX Hospitality Brands (the parent management entity which oversees the Strega Italiano, Legal Sea Foods, and Smith & Wollensky restaurant concepts) was set to open a Strega Italiano at 90-92 Middlesex Turnpike in the former Del Frisco’s Grille location. Now, according to an application filed with the Burlington Planning Department, it has shifted instead to opening a Smith & Wollensky steakhouse.

“Since that time and for various reasons, PPX Hospitality Brands … has decided that a Smith & Wollensky restaurant at this location would be a better and more appropriate fit for the marketplace,” the cover letter to the application states. “With locations in Boston and Wellesley, the applicant is excited about the opportunity to bring this most highly regarded American Steakhouse concept to Burlington as well.”

Smith & Wollensky was founded in 1977 by Alan Stillman, best known for creating T.G.I. Friday’s, and Ben Benson, in New York. It has since expanded to have locations in Chicago, Miami Beach, Las Vegas, Columbus, Houston, London, Taipei, and, as mentioned, Massachusetts.

The restaurant labels itself as a high-end location without a fear of trying new things.

“We’re not afraid to fail, it’s how we achieve what we do as a team and we have a good time doing it,” its website states. “We like to call this ‘swagger.’”
