Anti-Hate Vigil in Support of AAPI Community on Town Common Wednesday

There will be an anti-hate vigil in support of the Asian American and Pacific Island (AAPI) communities on the Town Common this week in response to the shootings in Georgia that lead to the killing of six Asian residents and two others earlier this month.

The rally is being coordinated by the Burlington Interfaith Clergy and the Burlington Equity Committee. It will begin at 5:15 p.m. with sign making and the vigil will begin at 5:30 p.m.

“Please join us at the Burlington Town Common to express support and love for our AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) community members,” the organizations wrote on Facebook. “Burlington is home to many Asian Americans; members of our community are targeted and the rise of anti-AAPI racism leaves many of our community members feeling afraid and unsafe. We must come together and show our support.”

In an earlier statement, the Burlington Equity Committee outlined the need for people to come together and resist racism.

“Earlier this week, eight people, including six women of Asian descent, were murdered in Georgia,” they said. “This incident has further shaken many of our friends and family, who were already feeling unsafe in our communities. We commend the Burlington Public Schools for speaking up on this issue, and acknowledging that we all play a role in making our schools and community a safe and welcoming place. Silence serves no one.”

Anyone planning to attend the event is asked to wear a mask and stay socially distanced. They also ask that attendees park at Simonds Park instead of Town Hall since the building will still be open. No dogs should be brought and the Town Common is smoking and alcohol free.
