Arlington Catholic Makes Comeback Against BHS Girls Softball in Quarter Finals

It was a big matchup for the Burlington High School Girls Softball team as they did battle with the Arlington Catholic Cougars on Wednesday, June 24 at Marvin Field in the MIAA Quarter Finals.

The Cougars started out with a bang as Junior Bianca Burke scored for Arlington Catholic 1 to nothing in the top of the 1st. The Cougars prevented the Red Devils from scoring in the bottom of both the first and second. Junior Centerfielder/1st Basemen Sophia Wojtaszek was hit by a pitch by Junior Kara McDonald during the bottom of the 1st and strolled to 1st base but the team was unable to capitalize on it. Freshmen Charlotte Wiley struck out in the bottom of the 1st by Junior/Pitcher Kara McDonald of the Cougars.

Arlington freshmen Addison O’Donovan found an opportunity to score in the top of the third putting the Cougars up two to nothing. Once again the Arlington Catholic defense did not allow a run for Burlington in the bottom of the third keeping the score 2 to zip.

Arlington Catholic struck out during the top 4th, giving Burlington a chance in the bottom inning. The Red Devils answered in the bottom 4th as Junior Centerfielder Reece McLean, Freshmen Outside fielder Morgan Ryan and Senior Second Basemen Sara Almonte scored three runs and took the lead over the Cougars 3-2.

The Cougars tied up the game in the top of the fifth with a run by Senior Madison Smith making the score 3-3.

A pitcher change for Burlington came in the bottom of the fifth inning as Freshmen Morgan Ryan replaced Sophomore Ella Bruno.

The bottom of the fifth was filled with a lot of scoring by Burlington as Junior Centerfielder Reece McLean, Junior Centerfielder/1st Basemen Sophia Wojtaszek, Freshmen 2nd Basemen Abigail Wojtaszek, Senior Second Basemen Sara Almonte, Senior Right Fielder Shannon McDonald and Freshmen Outside Fielder Shea McDonald all scored for Red Devils. At this point in time the score was 9 to 3 Burlington.

Things were looking up for Burlington as the Cougars were down a six point deficit. Arlington Catholic was not going home without a fight, however, and in the top of the 6th inning the Cougars made a huge comeback. Senior Bianca Burke, Freshmen Addison O’Donovan, Junior Isabella Dagostino, Senior Madison Smith, Freshmen Madison Conley, Junior Kara McDonald and Freshmen Kathleen Simmons all scored for Arlington Catholic.

This was a huge letdown for Burlington as they allowed 8 runs and lost the lead while doing so. 11-9 was the score at the end of the 6th inning.

The Red Devils had some lost opportunities in the bottom of the 6 and 7th innings with Morgan Ryan striking out in the bottom of the 6 and Sara Almonte getting a hit that was caught by the right fielder Kara McDonald.

Arlington Catholic scored one more time in the top of the seventh when Junior Isabella Dagostino found home plate. The final in the game was 12-9 Arlington Catholic.
