On August 14, 1970, Chapter 686 of the Acts of 1970 was signed into law. This act allowed for a Representative Town Meeting form of government in Burlington, which was subsequently approved by the voters of Burlington on March 6, 1971 by a vote of 4,307 in favor, 1557 opposed and 410 blanks. On March 4, 1972, the first members were elected.
