It is a night that hopefully will be the time of their lives.
After being forced to cancel all major gatherings during the senior year of the Class of 2020, the Burlington School Department is trying to make some special events, even if they are modified, possible for the Class of 2021 who have seen their entire senior year be a hybrid model of learning.
Last week it was announced there would be a Senior Night Under the Stars for the class on Friday, May 14 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. While Principal Mark Sullivan was quick to say this was not a traditional prom because they don’t want to raise expectations to something they cannot meet, he did say students are welcome to wear any prom attire they have already purchased or rented (however, heels are not allowed on the field).
“We wanted to give the seniors something,” he said. “We were trying to make an event that they will have fun and celebrate as a class.”
The event will feature food trucks, music, games and casino tables and numerous backdrops for photos.
There are also limitations due to COVID-19 safety protocols. First the event is only open to BHS seniors and dancing and other events must be done with social distancing. All eating will be done in the bleachers with at least six feet of separation.
Finally, Principal Sullivan said on Friday that these plans are all contingent on approval from the Board of Health and further restrictions may be put in place if deemed necessary for safety.
