BHS Softball Advances to Quarter Finals in the MIAA State Tournament After Finishing Tight Game Against Melrose

It was a game of back and forth as the Burlington High School Girls Softball hosted the Melrose Red Raiders on Monday, June 21 at Marvin Field in the North Division 2 MIAA Playoffs.

During the 1st inning Melrose got off to an early lead with a score of 1 to nothing and The Red Devils were unable to tap home plate during their turn at bat. However, that changed in the second when the Red Devils were able to prevent Melrose from scoring but added two runs of their own, taking the lead 2-1.

The score did not change until the top of the fourth inning when the Melrose Red Raiders answered back as they scored two runs around home plate changing the score to 3 to 2.

Burlington answered back as Junior Sophia Wojtaszek got to home plate tying it for the Devils 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth. As the game was heating up, Burlington and Melrose defenses found ways to stop each other from scoring in the 5 and 6 innings.

The top of the seventh saw more scoring as the Red Raiders found home plate twice for the lead 5 to 3.

Burlington needed to score during the bottom of the seventh or the game would be over. Luckily, Junior Reece McLean and graduated senior Hannah Boulos tied the game just in time.

The game wasn’t over yet as both teams were tied and went into extra innings. Melrose found a way to take the lead over Burlington 6 to 5 in the top of the eighth. With the Red Devils now in critical condition in the bottom of the 8th, they needed to find a way to score. Reece McLean and Sofia Wojtsazek came through for the team as they finished the game with a 7 to 6 victory.

The team will be facing Arlington Catholic on Wednesday, June 23 at Marvin Field at 4:15 p.m.
