The Burlington Police Department is responding to concerns from residents about loud noises that sounded like bombs.
On the social media platform X Wednesday night, BPD posted, “The Burlington Police have received numerous calls regarding loud explosions heard by residents in the area. We’ve confirmed Massachusetts State Police was conducting controlled disposal of expired Military Flares in Bedford.”
Now, BPD Chief Thomas Browne has told BNEWS that the department didn’t know the detonations would cause such a loud noise and therefore didn’t know they’d need to warn people.
“Someone had dropped off vintage flares to Burlington Fire. They called us….we responded to BFD and then made a referral to the state police bomb squad,” Browne wrote in an email. “The bomb squad took the items to Bedford and detonated them. MSP was unaware that this would cause such loud explosions. We had no information on this other than what state police told us and could not have warned anyone – as we were not aware that there would, in fact, be such dynamic explosions.
