The 10U Burlington Softball team’s season came to a close last week as they finished out the year as the Middle Essex Softball Leagues’ runner up.
“We came close to winning the league,” Head Coach Manny Ortiz said. “We beat Lowell at home 4-2 and we were tied with them for first place,” he said.
Burlington competed against Lowell the second time around in one of the last couple of games of the season, but were only able to score three runs in the 3-14 loss. The girls ended the season on a high note as they competed against Wakefield in their final game of the season where they took home the victory 12-3.
Overall the girls did very well this season as they finished with an 8-3 record with wins against Beverly once, Maynard-Stow once, Danvers once, Reading twice, Wakefield once, Dracut once and Lowell-Shedd once. Danvers, Wakefield and Lowell-Shedd were the three losses the team had during the season.
With the season in the rear-view mirror, coach Manny Ortiz is reflecting on the many memories he had with his athletes on the diamond.
“I am so proud of these thirteen girls who were so awesome each and every game,” he said. “I loved watching them get better each game, how they competed and had fun. The bonding this team showed was unbelievable.” he said. Not only did these girls improve day by day, they showed how well they were doing in the regular season.“They pitched, caught, made a lot of great plays in field and they hit the ball very well. Just the fun they had doing it,” Ortiz said.
Coach Ortiz is excited to return next season and hopes to see everyone compete at the same level as they did this this year.
“Hopefully all the girls keep working hard to get even better for next season”, he said. “I know most of the girls will be doing a fall league in Billerica. I’m off to coaching 6th grade travel girls basketball when it starts up.”
