David Lovering, Burlington High School alumni and the drummer for the band The Pixies, toured his old alma mater on the day of the release of the Pixies’ new album, “The Night The Zombies Came.”
Lovering and bandmates are on another world tour, with stops planned in Australia, Germany, the U.K. and elsewhere, but he couldn’t skip out on the hallowed halls of BHS.
Lovering graduated from BHS in 1980, where he played drums and was in the marching band, and joined the alt rock Pixies in 1986. They sold 705,000 copies of their first album, Surfer Rosa, and earned a Gold Award from the Recording Industry Association of America. But the band famously squabbled, and they broke up in 1993, at which point Lovering pursued a career in magic and performed under the stage name the Scientific Phenomenalist. The band reunited in 2003.

On his visit, Lovering toured his old band room and spoke to current music teachers, Tim Ketterer and Beth Holmgren; he also gave a presentation to about 60 BHS students, sharing stories of playing in the BHS marching band and performing some magic tricks. Lovering says he’s enjoying the tour, seeing the world, staying in nice hotels and eating at fine restaurants.
BHS Performing Arts Director John Middleton-Cox said Lovering was kind and laid back, and said he was enjoying the world tour, staying in nice hotels and eating at fine restaurants.
