Burlington Continues Rollout of Voting System For Visually Impaired Voters

Visually impaired voters in Burlington will have the option to vote online with a secure web portal in April’s Town Election.

The system is operated by the company Democracy Live and has been rolling out gradually since the passage of the VOTES Act in June of last year. Voters receive a personalized login and can access the same ballot a sighted voter receives.

“If they’re visually impaired, most of them have readers on their computers. So it will read it for them, and then they can just say mark this for this person.”

The system may also benefit voters with difficulties using their hands, said Burlington Town Clerk Amy Warfield.

“They would get an email link that is secure, with a PIN, and they would go from there.”

Voters interested in the online system can contact the Town Clerk’s office at vote@burlington.org.

The ballot is available for anyone voting early in Burlington’s April 1 town elections and will also be available for state and national elections in 2024.
