Burlington Parents Upset Over Youth Risk Behavior Survey

The public participation portion of the April 1 School Committee meeting was extensive and at times emotionally-charged, as many parents expressed their anger and frustration over the recent Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) administered to middle-school students.

The YRBS is administered bi-annually by the district and parents are given the option to opt their child out of participating. The committee began the meeting by addressing general concerns with the survey.

Public comments on the survey then began for over an hour, with many residents declaring they had lost their trust in Burlington Public Schools.

After hearings on the 2025-2026 Budget, the committee requested the administration to address the concerns of Burlington parents, and consider opt in vs opt out options and School Committee approval for the distribution of future surveys. You can watch the full-meeting below.
