Burlington Relay for Life to be In-Person Again

Burlington’s annual Relay for Life will be back in person this summer after two years of going virtual though it will still look different than it did in the days before the pandemic.

On Monday night the Select Board voted to approve use of the Common for the cancer-fighting event. The 2022 Relay for Life will be held on Saturday, June 18 from 2 to 9 p.m. and rather than being at the high school field, which will be undergoing work, this year will be in the town center.

“We’re looking to try and keep as close as possible to our traditions and have something comparable to Celebrate Burlington or Truck Day,” Burlington Relay Coordinator Nikki Pladziewicz said.

Traditions of Relay for Life typically include speeches by cancer survivors and caregivers, a Survivor’s Lap and the Luminaria ceremony, featuring candles in bags with the names of those fighting cancer, those who have beaten it and those who have died due to the disease written on them.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is an event to raise funds for cancer research and to support cancer patients and their families. Along with funding research, money raised goes to a variety of services for those afflicted with this terrible disease, including providing patients transportation to treatment, the “Look Good, Feel Better” program that helps women cope with the appearance-related side effects of treatment, summer camps for children with cancer, providing patients with necessary information and providing free lodging for families traveling with patients for treatment.

We will have further coverage of Burlington Relay for Life, including upcoming fundraising efforts, as the information becomes available.
