Burlington Secures $1 Million Federal Grant for Middlesex Turnpike Project

Town Administrator John Danizio announced during a recent Select Board meeting that Burlington has been awarded a $1 million federal grant through the FY26 Community Project Funding program.

The funding request, submitted by Seth Moulton, passed through the federal appropriations process in Congress and was signed into law by the President.

“Another million-dollar grant secured by our Economic Development Director,” Danizio said, crediting Economic Development Director Melisa Tintocalis for her work securing the funding.

The grant will support improvements to Burlington’s transportation and economic development infrastructure. The project will fund final design work and bid documents for improvements to pedestrian and multi-use pathways along Middlesex Turnpike through the commercial corridor.

The work specifically focuses on improving connections near the Route 128 overpass and toward Mall Road.

“This is a huge win for us,” Danizio said. “That project has a big price tag, and now we have the ability to get a design done and have it shovel-ready to go chase more grants or partner with any development that’s coming to town. To be able to partner and leverage these funds is a huge win for the town.”

Danizio noted that federal funding can sometimes experience delays but emphasized that the funding itself has been secured.

“The important thing, in bold print, is the funding is secured and will be coming to Burlington,” he said.
