This Thursday is Juneteenth, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. The day was first celebrated in 1865 in Texas, after all slaves were declared free by the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862. Juneteenth is a federal holiday, and many town offices and schools will be closed. BNEWS has compiled a list of events in the area you can attend to celebrate the day.

The City of Gloucester will be hosting their 5th Annual Juneteenth Celebration from 9-12 pm today. The event is free and hosted at City Hall on 2 Dale Avenue. Click here for a full schedule of activities.
Christ Church United in Lowell will be hosting a community conversation called “Juneteenth: Re-entering The Conversation” from 6-8 pm at Stewart Hall on 1 Bartlett Street in Lowell. Refreshments will be provided and the event is free. You can find more information and get tickets here.

The City of Salem will host their second Juneteenth Jam Festival starting at noon at Charlotte Forten Park. The day will be full of activities, concluding with a screening of the film Black Panther- Wakanda Forever later in the evening.
Woburn will be hosting their Juneteenth Celebration this Saturday June 21st from 2-4pm at the Woburn Public Library front lawn and front parking lot, with additional activities happening in the Woburn Public Library. This year’s Juneteenth will again be a block party-style celebration with music, all-age activities, community tables, food and vendors. The event is free and all are welcome to attend.
