Cigars and More at 64 Middlesex Turnpike incurred a three-day suspension of its license to sell tobacco products after failing a Board of Health compliance check.
According to health agent Maureen Johnson, a person under the age of 21 was able to purchase a package of Marlboro cigarettes during an inspection, which is a violation of Burlington and state laws about the sale of tobacco to persons under the age of 21.
Because this was the company’s first violation, they were issued a $1,000 fine and lost their license for three consecutive business days.
Bhavesh Bhut, who represented Cigars and More at the Board of Health, said the employee who made the mistake was in her first week of work and had since been fired. “I do accept that unfortunately this did happen, a mistake did happen at this,” he said.
“We’re protecting the community, and this is what we have to do,” said Board of Health Chair Dr. Ed Weiner.
