Family, friends, and community members gathered at Grandview Farm the evening of June 7th for BCAT’s Annual Meeting & Appreciation Night, a chance for the organization to thank its dedicated body of volunteers for their contributions to the Burlington community.
Volunteer Bill Hayes received the highest honor of the evening, BCAT’s Volunteer of the Year Award. “This is certainly a surprise, especially when you look at all the talent in the room. It’s just an honor to be a part of that,” he said.
Hayes thanked the BCAT staff for their patience in sharing their knowledge with him, and also took a moment to commend the work of BCAT’s student programs. “I originally went to school for radio and television, and I never pursued it, and I think if those programs that are around for these young kids today were around when I was going through it maybe I would’ve stayed with it,” he said. “But I’m inspired by the work that you guys do, and if it is your passion I really encourage you to stay with it.”
BHS 2024 graduate Anthony Matos was the recipient of the BCAT Student Grant. Matos joined the BCAT community as a Video Voyager, BCAT’s middle school television club, became the BNEWS Sports Anchor in 2021, and has been the voice of the Red Devils, announcing games for multiple teams across seasons. “Whether it was reading ‘The Grinch’ to kids at Christmas, or hosting BNEWS Sports Hub, I wouldn’t trade BCAT for the world. It’s one big family,” Matos said.
Volunteer Christina Nikitas received the award for Outstanding New Series for her program “The Discourse Dive”. In a heartfelt speech, Nikitas expressed her gratitude to the BCAT staff and volunteers who helped make her series a reality. “I accept this award with the utmost gratitude, but please know I share it with each of you. You’re such an intrinsic part of this show. Every stage of it. Here’s to you.”
The Board of Directors also honored four of the organization’s veteran volunteers: Jack Gilbert, Susan Linder, Chris Rose, and Brandy Sales. Former BCAT Production Coordinator John Viaes was honored for his contributions to the organization, and longtime volunteer Veras Connolly was welcomed to the BCAT staff.
