Election Update – Ballot Takes Shape with Multiple Contested Races

Update: Since the publication of this story, Joseph Impemba has withdrawn his papers from the election, thus leaving the Planning Board race uncontested, with Jack Kelly as the sole candidate on the ballot.

Candidates have returned their nomination papers, and the ballot has been finalized for the Annual Town Election.

There will be several contested races this year for School Committee, Planning Board, and all seven precincts of Town Meeting.

Four candidates will be vying for two open-seats on the School Committee, including, incumbents Katherine Bond, current vice chair, and Jeremy Brooks, along with newcomers Hilary Kleck Aaron Reeves.

The race for one seat on the Planning Board features two candidates: longtime member Joseph Impemba and challenger Jack Kelly. Kelly, currently a Precinct Seven Town Meeting member, previously served on the Planning Board for 17 years before stepping down in 2019. He also campaigned to return to the board in last year’s election.

There are contested races across all of Town Meeting.

In Precinct One, newcomers Vance Huntoon and Craig MacElhiney are vying for a single two-year seat.

Precinct Two has no contested races. Six three-year seats are open, with five candidates on the ballot.

Precinct Three has eight candidates seeking six three-year seats. They include incumbents Jeffrey Dibona, Monte Pearson, Daniel Raske, Roger Riggs, and Robert Young, along with newcomers Nicole Cella, AJ Ferrigno, and Mary Jean Lucas.

In Precinct Four, seven candidates are running for six three-year seats. They include incumbents Karen Cooper, William Lisano, Michael Proulx, Kevin Spielberger, and Schiffon Wong, along with newcomers Kerrie Callahan and Laurie Glasser.

Precinct Five also has seven candidates running for six three-year seats. Incumbents include Bonnie Nichols, Michele Prendergast, Alex Rutfield, David Tait, Richard Wing, and Sarah Wolinski. They are joined by newcomer Jason Toppan.

Precinct Six has six three-year seats and one two-year seat open. Seven candidates are running for the six three-year seats, including incumbents Ryan Clement, John Iler, Blaise Leeber, Rose Manni, and Edward Parsons, along with newcomer Adrianne Simone.

Two candidates are vying for the one two-year seat: newcomers Erika Maguire and William Trelegan.

Finally, in Precinct Seven, two candidates are running for a single one-year seat: newcomers Neal Lesapasio and Jami Weber.

The rest of the major races in this year’s election will be uncontested. Town Clerk Jennifer Priest will be the sole candidate to fill a five-year term, after winning in last year’s election to step-in for the remaining year of the retiring Amy Warfield. Town Moderator Bill Beyer will run unopposed as he seeks his eighth term. Select Board member Jim Tigges is seeking a fourth term. Lindsay Carlson is seeking a second term with the Recreation Commission. Over in the race for Board of Health, newcomer Orisa Hanushevsky is the only candidate seeking to fill the seat of longtime member Maribeth Welch, who has decided not to seek re-election.

The Annual Town Election will take place on Saturday April 11 with polls open at Burlington High School from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.  The last day to register to vote is Wednesday April 1. Stay tuned to BCAT for more election updates, including candidate debates in the coming weeks.
