This Sunday January 19 has been declared National Popcorn Day by The Cinema Foundation, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and expanding the cinema industry through promotion and audience engagement. Moviegoers may remember National Cinema Day in 2022, which was made possible by the foundation’s efforts, when for one-day only (September 3) movie theaters nationwide offered tickets at a discounted price of three dollars.
This year The Cinema Foundation launched the initiative “@ the Movies” with four days in the hopes of attracting audiences back to the theaters. Many national theater chains will be running special promotions on January 19. AMC Theatres, which is located in Burlington, will be offering unlimited refills on any size popcorn throughout the day. Down the street at Showcase Cinemas in Woburn, members of their StarPass Program will receive a free small popcorn with any ticket purchase.
If you don’t mind a longer drive to the theater, Cinemark, its closest location in Salem NH, says it’s BYOB (Bring Your Own Bucket) on Sunday. Bring any container (up to 400 ounces) and they’ll fill it to the brim with buttery goodness.
January is typically not the biggest month for new releases, but there’s plenty of popular films from last year still in theaters. Here’s some you might enjoy…
A Complete Unknown – Timothee Chalamet stars as the legendary singer Bob Dylan in this biopic focusing on his rise to fame.
Mufasa – The Lion King – A prequel to the 2019 remake of the Disney classic, that tells the story of Mufasa and Scar’s younger days. Academy Award-Winner Barry Jenkins directs.
Nosferatu – Horror fans may enjoy Director Robert Eggers’s (The Lighthouse, The Witch) new take on the classic story of Dracula.
Wicked – (If you haven’t seen it already) Director John M. Chu’s (In The Heights, Crazy Rich Asians) adaptation of the same-named stage musical, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande is still in theaters.
The Goonies – The classic film from 1985 returns to theaters this weekend to celebrate its 40th Anniversary.
