Governor Baker Releases Guidelines on Sports and Recreational Activities

On Monday July 6 Governor Baker announced his Phase 3 reopening plan for the state of Massachusetts. One of most notable plans was allowing sports/recreational activities.

Their are three risk levels, low, moderate and high. Each category describes what sports are risky and non-risky during the Pandemic.

Starting at the lowest risk which are  sports that can be done with social distancing. Some examples of these are, Batting cages, tennis, pickleball, swimming, catch, disc golf, golf, individual biking, surfing, horseback riding, individual sailing, fishing, hunting, motor sports, yoga & no contact exercise classes, gymnastics.

The moderate risk consist of certain sports and recreation activities that involve intermittent contact, but with protective equipment or mitigating measures in place that may reduce the likelihood of respiratory particle transmission between participants such as, wearing masks and modifying play.

Other sports that are represented in this category are, Baseball, softball, crew/sailing (2-3 people in a boat), track and field, cross country, running clubs, team swimming, volleyball, dance class, fencing, field hockey, no-contact lacrosse.

High risk has been categorized for sports that involve close, sustained contact between participants, lack of significant protective barriers, and high probability that respiratory particles will be transmitted between participants.

Sports represented in this category are, Football, wrestling, soccer, rugby, basketball, lacrosse, ice-hockey, competitive cheer, martial arts, crew/sailing (more than 3 people in a boat), ultimate frisbee.

Governor baker also released 3 type of play levels, that are defined by least to greatest risk, levels 1, 2 and 3.

At the lowest is Level 1 which allows Individual or socially distanced group activities (no-contact workouts, aerobic conditioning, individual skill work, and drills)

More moderate is Level 2 which allows competitive practices (Intra-team/group games, contact drills and scrimmages)

Level 3 is categorized as in-between moderate and high and allows athletes to participate competitions (Inter-team games, meets, matches, races, etc.)

Lastly, Level 4 allows athletes to play Tournaments, however these are to be conducted outside only.
