Learn About the Historic Kent Cottage With Special Presentation

Learn about a historic Burlington house that will soon see some big changes.

The Burlington Historical Society is hosting a presentation on the Kent Cottage by local history buff and creator of the Burlington Retro website Robert Fahey. The presentation will start at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 3 at the Human Resources Building at 61 Center Street.

“Robert Fahey is a lifelong Burlington resident who created the website to preserve Burlington history before it is lost,” a release states. “Robert spent a year researching Kent Cottage, the stone structure near the Bedford line across from the old RCA location. He uncovered a gold mine of old photos tucked in the archives of Williams College.”

Kent Cottage is located at 10 Network Drive. According to a 2015 story by the Burlington Union, Kent Cottage was built in the 1850s for brewer John Kent and his family. It was used as a residence until sometime after the 1930s when the land surrounding the home was repurposed for commercial purposes. According to Massachusetts Historical Commission Archives, Kent Cottage is the only known example of an 1850s English Country Style home in town.

The site will soon see some big changes. In May, Town Meeting voted to approve a change to the Northwest Park Planned Development District (PDD) zoning provisions to allow residential units to be built in the building and to either side of it. Fortunately, the plans do include a provision to maintain the historic facade of the cottage.
