Leo Abramov passed away peacefully on March 9 after a courageous nine-month battle with stomach cancer. He was 36 years old.
Leo had only been married to his wife Kerrylynne for nine months when he was diagnosed with cancer. According to his obituary, the two shared a beautiful love and faced his illness with “dignity, humor and unyielding support.”
Leo loved the outdoors and running, and had completed a half marathon. He was also active in advocating for transgender rights, and, along with Kerrylynne, founded Burlington’s annual LGBTQ Pride celebration.
There will be no funeral service for Leo, but a celebration of his life is planned around his birthday in June. Loved ones are asking that in lieu of flowers, supporters make a donation to a GoFundMe set up in his name.
The GoFundMe will help cover medical bills, a scholarship in Leo’s name for Burlington Public School seniors who are members of the LGBTQ community, and a memorial bench in Town Common.
Burlington’s annual pride celebration is to be renamed Leo’s Pride in his honor.
On the GoFundMe, loved ones wrote, “While we are all heartbroken by his absence, Kerry and his beloved stepdaughter Rozzie will continue the legacy of acceptance, openness, and love Leo left behind.”
