Obituary: Carleton “Carl” W. Boutwell

Retired Burlington Police Captain, of Woburn, died peacefully, June 28th with his family by his side at the age of seventy-seven. He was the beloved husband of 50 years to Nancy E. (Pierce) Boutwell.  The son of the late Carleton and Lillian Boutwell, Carl made Woburn, MA his home.  Carl graduated from Woburn High School, class of 1964, before earning a bachelor’s degree from Salem State College and a master’s in criminal justice from Western New England College.

After 6 years of service in Massachusetts Army National Guard, Carl began an accomplished police career in 1978, serving as a Woburn Police reserve before spending 28 years on the Burlington Police Department, retiring as Captain in 2011.  In addition to the many years of service to the Burlington community, Carl will also be remembered for the impact he had in Woburn, most notably as a member of the Woburn High School Football coaching staff for over 30 years where he also coached his three sons.

Athletics were a big part of Carl’s life over the years from football, baseball, fast-pitch softball to coaching youth and high school sports, and even picking up golf in his retirement.  Carl and his boys could be found on the course every father’s day, and they made great memories while traveling together to play renowned courses such as Pebble Beach and TPC Sawgrass (Carl would want it known that he did put one on the green at 17).  What he enjoyed most about athletics though, were the lifelong friendships he made with his teammates, players, and fellow coaches.

Above all, Carl was known for his devotion to his family.  His greatest joy was being a husband, Dad, and Papa. Carl’s favorite vacation was his annual trip to Aruba with his wife, which in recent years included the entire family. There was nothing Carl enjoyed more than spending his summers with his family, especially his grandchildren, on Great East Lake in Maine or at the beach in South Yarmouth.

In addition to his wife Nancy, Carl is survived and will be deeply missed by his sons, Carleton M. Boutwell, his wife Julie of Winchester, Jeffrey P. Boutwell, his wife Dyana of North Reading and Todd M. Boutwell, his wife Kristan of Winchester. Cherished grandfather of Jackson, Taylor, Amelia, Nicholas, Presley, Grant and Warren. Dear brother of Ronald Boutwell, his wife Jodi of Merrimack, NH and Beth Hendricks of Woburn. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Carl’s Funeral Service will take place on Wednesday, July 12th at 10 a.m. in the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn.  Interment to follow in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to calling hours, Tuesday, July 11th, from 4-7 p.m at the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, MA. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Carl’s honor to the MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4470, Houston, TX 77210-4470 to support their glioblastoma research program.
