People Helping People Takes Steps to Fight Hunger at Project Bread’s 58th Walk for Hunger

Burlington’s People Helping People will take part in Walk for Hunger on Sunday, May 3, joining communities across Massachusetts in support of statewide food security efforts.

For the fifth consecutive year, the organization will raise funds through Project Bread’s Commonwealth Program, which allows participating nonprofits to keep 60 percent of the funds they raise to support their own local hunger relief programs. The remaining funds go toward broader statewide efforts to expand access to nutritious food.

While the main event begins at 9 a.m. on the Boston Common, People Helping People will once again host a local option for residents. Community members are invited to take part in a virtual walk at Burlington High School, making it easier to participate close to home while supporting neighbors in need.

Led this year by Pantry Manager Abby Hurd and Operations Manager Julianne Kelleher, the team is working toward a $2,000 fundraising goal to help stock essential pantry items, including hard-to-source staples like milk. Organizers say the effort comes at a time of growing demand for food assistance in Burlington.

“The Walk for Hunger is about raising awareness of the very real problem of food insecurity in our own community and beyond,” said Kelleher. “It’s inspiring to see people come together locally to support one another and ensure our neighbors have access to the food they need.”
