Pine Glen Celebrates National Hispanic American Heritage Month

The following is a guest post by Rachel Small, Pine Glen Teacher Librarian:

Pine Glen has been celebrating National Hispanic American Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15) by reading many books from Hispanic American authors and illustrators. Every year, we also participate in the picture book study of the Global Read Aloud with the goal of “one book to connect the world.” This year’s author/illustrator is Duncan Tonatiuh. We are reading and studying six of his books for the next six weeks.

We are learning about:

  • Duncan Tonatiuh’s art technique that is inspired by Mixtec (an indiginous group from Mexico) artists
  • Similarities and differences of Mexico and America
    • Languages
    • Holidays & celebrations
    • Sports & games
    • Foods
    • Clothing
    • Weather
  • Some Spanish vocabulary
  • Many of our students’ families have come to America from different countries
  • Many of our students have come to America from different countries
  • We celebrate many different holidays
  • We speak many different languages
