Kyle Singer has been volunteering with BCAT for a long time, so it wasn’t surprising when he said he wanted to start a podcast, New England Sports Talk. The concept was simple: Friends sitting around the mic, talking about everything from the Celtics to the Red Sox to the best snacks for the optimal game-watching experience.
“Right after the pandemic, I chatted with Jen [Dodge, BCAT’s executive director,] and I came with the group for a tour,” Singer said. “I was looking forward to doing something different than my normal television show.”
Singer runs the podcast with a spirit of generosity, inviting new co-hosts and guests to keep the energy changing. Alisha Murphy joined as a host for the first time in NEST’s most recent recording; he also invited James Anderson, the marathoner at the heart of the local nonprofit The James Gang, which raises money for adults with disabilities.
Singer and his friends arrive together, record their podcast in the BCAT studio, and frequently stay a while after to enjoy their lunch in the BCAT conference room, chatting about sports, their friends, and whatever else strikes their fancy. They’re joined by Festus Muisyo, a skills instructor with Comunitas, an organization that supports adults with disabilities.
“I’m just proud of how the whole process is going,” Muisyo said. “Kyle came to me when he wanted to start, when it was just an idea, and then for it to actually become a thing, I’m really proud of the whole process.”
Singer is an athlete himself: He and many of his friends play with the Rotary Special Olympics Basketball Team. And he’s an avid sports fan. He follows the Boston teams, of course, as well as teams in Worcester and New York. “You’re talking to a New Yorker,” he said.
Asked if he had any advice for other community members who are interested in starting their own podcast, Kyle kept it simple. “Make it your own, have fun,” he said. “If you like movies, do movies. If you like history, do history. It’s fun.”
